The Story of Hanukkah

As the Jewish calendar brings moves closer to the days of Hanukkah, all eyes turn to Jerusalem, the center stage for an amazing story of few against many, weak against strong.

Now a small minority in their own land, the plight of the Jews looks dismal as the massive Syrian-Greek Empire invades. Forbidden from worship at their Temple in Jerusalem, the situation feels hopeless for the Jewish people.

Just outside of Jerusalem a small group of rebels, the Maccabees, gather with a strong desire to fight but little hope of success against such an enormous army.

Until one woman decides to take things into her own hands.

After the army has destroyed her small village, Judith, a beautiful widow, packs up some cakes and salty cheese heading to the enemy camp. With her stunning looks, she is ushered into the commander’s tent where she entices him to eat her salty food making him drink too much wine. As he drifts off into a peaceful sleep, Judith springs into action grabbing his sword and cutting off his head. Sneaking out of the camp unnoticed, Judith takes the head and presents it to the Maccabees. Inspired by the power and ability of one woman, their faith was restored and together they fought the invaders forcing them out of their land and finally regaining access to the Holy Temple.

The story of Hanukkah is a powerful reminder that even in the most desperate situations, there is always hope, and one individual’s action has the power to change the course of history
