שמע ישראל אלוהינו אלוהים אחד
Sh’ma Israel Adoni Eloheinu, Adoni Echad
Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one
This verse from the Torah encapsulates the monotheistic essence of Judaism and comprises a centerpiece of daily prayer: “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one.” It is considered a mitzvah to say Sh’ma twice daily. And it is traditional for Jews to say the Sh’ma as their last words, and parents teach it to their children before they go to sleep at night.
